2007 - 2008 Works of Art

At the heart of The Center's educational practice is the work of art, selected for its high quality and richness as a teaching resource. Each year The Center offers a varied repertory of live theater, dance and music performances and visual arts exhibits. During the school year, performances may be main staged or tour our participating schools.

The Frog Bride

A hip new family-friendly adaptation of the classic Russian fairy tale beautifully set to the music of Prokofiev and original jazz/rock compositions. This story traces the journey of a dreamy (and prideful) youth into manhood and carries a powerful message within its rich images and action, as Ivon, the hero-to-be, pays a heavy price for his selfish choices. Through an ardent adventure to the mysterious "land of three times nine" he ultimately grows into a compassionate man. Told with a comic spark that swells to the outrageous, "The Frog Bride" engages the imagination and delivers a call for self-assurance, courage and forgiveness. The scope of the show ranges from narrative, to buffoonery, to high drama. - "Imaginative, moving and beautifully performed...an enactment of art-making!" - The Lincoln Center Institute

December 11, 12, 13, 2007 and March 24, 25, 26, 2008

Aesop Bops!

How might a tiny mouse help a giant lion? Could a talking flounder really be an enchanted prince? Why does the turtle have a checkered shell? You'll be dazzled by the answers in this physical, fast-paced, and funky show by master storyteller David Gonzalez. Funny voices, witty songs, fresh movement, live music and plenty of audience participation come together for this delightful twist on Aesop's centuries-old moral tales.

Guy Davis

He's a musician, composer, actor, director, and writer. But most importantly, Guy Davis is a bluesman. The blues permeates every corner of Davis' creativity. Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to reviving the traditions of acoustic blues and bringing them to as many ears as possible through the material of the great blues masters, African American stories, and his own original songs, stories and performance pieces.

1776

Book by Peter Stone, Music and Lyrics by Sherman Edwards.
It's the summer of 1776, and the nation is ready to declare independence... if only our founding fathers can agree to do it! 1776 follows John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, and Richard Henry Lee and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia as they attempt to convince the members of the second Continental Congress to vote for independence from the shackles of the British monarchy by signing the Declaration of Independence.

"1776" puts a human face on the pages of history as we see the men behind the national icons: proud, frightened, uncertain, irritable, charming, often petty and ultimately noble figures determined to do the right thing for a fledgling nation.... Reprised from NYSTI's 2005 - 2006 season. Field trip to NYSTI.

Very limited availability March 14 and 19 only.  Call The Center for AIE for alternative NSYTI options

Sylvie (Wickstrom) Kantotovitz

Sylvie (Wickstrom) Kantotovitz Featured from our Literary Arts strand, author / illustrator Sylvie (Wickstrom) Kantotovitz and her books are your live Work of Art!  The illustrator... Browsing through the art books in various bookstores, I felt irresistibly attracted by the nearby shelves of children's books. Such fun stories, such beautiful pictures! And then it struck me. "WHY NOT ME?" Then the writer... Although I had already authored a story, my desire to write developed with the arrival of my daughter, Sosha. She loved to be read to and I loved reading to her. But she also loved to hear invented stories, especially about her...
